TIPS FOR SHARING IN A SUPPORT GROUP

  • Use “I” Statements or “have you thought of” rather than “you should” or “you must” pronouncements
  • Share only what you are comfortable with – you have the right to pass
  • Respect the right of others to time – do not try to dominate the conversation
  • Be tolerant of each others differences and be aware of the things you have in common
  • Encourage a positive self-help attitude in each other
  • Support group meetings are not the place to expound your personal philosophies and theories
  • Share, but try not to give advice
  • Feelings are neither good of bad – they just are!
  • No one can solve someone else’s problem, please don’t try.  Just listen, support and share.
